She’s got a tongue like an electric eel, and she likes the taste of a man’s tonsils!

I’m listening to this podcast right now, and I have an answer for the whole, “why the hell do the ads for local businesses feature the owners” question. As someone who spent three years writing local ads that ran on cable, I can say with confidence that as you suspected, it’s because the owners have big egos. It’s not so much that they fancy themselves local celebrities (although that sometimes is the case) it’s that they look at it like, “this is my business, I’m paying for my commercial, so I’m going to do what I want.” The writers never suggest that shit. So keep this in mind whenever you see a local ad: Every time an owner is featured, a child speaks, or the employees gather together at the end and either wave or say something in unison, that is ALWAYS THE OWNER’S FAULT. I learned early on that for every commercial you write that turns out halfway decent, there are 100 that you write that end up sucking hard.
I know that’s way more of an involved answer than you were looking for, but damn. Local ads still drive me crazy.
I’m sad that Deadwood isn’t like the set of Deadwood, complete with Ian McShane swearing his face off.
I’d pay good money to see that (like Deadwood DVD set money good).
