St. Gregory The Great and His Good Chum Cornelius

Hi Greg.

Greeting Cornelius. How are you today?

Well Greg, I have had better days. Ellen kicked me out of the nest today.

Cornelius my good friend, I am sorry to hear that. I know things have not been going well between you two for a while now. I pray for reconciliation and the return of better days.

I probably shouldn’t have married a vulture.

No. Probably not.

I think we need a time out. Maybe I’ll start migration a bit early this early. See what’s up with cousin Bert in Constantinople — get some sun. It’s damp here.

Ack. Constantinople. If you bump into Eutychius do me a favour and drop him off one of your special “7-grain dove bars” will you?

Oh sure thing Greg.

I hate that guy.

I know you do. I thought you folks were supposed to love and forgive everyone.

Yeah, SUPPOSED TO!

Ha ha ha! That’s why they call you Gregory The Great!

Yes, that and my giant penis of course.

Of course.

Cornelius my friend, you’ll have to excuse me but I have work to do. I need to oversee development of the notion of private penance as parallel to the institution of public penance and then I was thinking about teaching a doctrine of Purgatory where a soul destined to undergo purification after death because of certain sins, could begin its purification in this earthly life, through good works, obedience and Christian conduct, making the travails to come lighter and shorter.

Taking the Papal Bull by the horns, eh?

Oh Cornelius honestly. You are too much.

I hope the research you did into St. Gregory will keep you out of hell.

Doubt it.
