Hawaii 2008: Day 3

She Loved Bamboo

Up at 8:30am and out the door at 9:30! It’s an April miracle.

Our first stop was Hawi, up in the northern nook of the Big Island. We just blew through it last time we were there and it was definitely worth a stop for the giant tree and the best peanut butter cookie in the universe. Tara bought the homemade “Oreo” cookie. Mmmm.

After that it was a drive up the coast (happy to report the “I regret nothing!” stairway is still the same) to the Hawaii Botanical Gardens on the lush rainy side of the island, just outside of Hilo. The highlight (also seen above) happened about 30 seconds into the visit but catching the big bird at the waterfall with my telephoto lens was a close second.

Then it was in Hilo for lunch at Hilo Bay Cafe (yum, recommended!), a visit to the farmer’s market and an unsuccessful search for Keckler’s pineapple turnovers store. All that and home at 6pm.

Tomorrow? Beach and eating. Awwww yeah.

I’m having great fun vicarioulsy enjoying your vacation. When I was in Hawi about a year and a half ago, I noticed 3-4 signs of the “Just say no to Meth” variety posted around town. Hopefully, “Meat” and “Candy” have won out in the end.
Love the bird photos (that’s a black-crowned night heron.)

  2. Yikes, meth? I guess I can see that, it is isolated and there’s no industry up there but tourism. I think I might d drugs if I had to pander to tourists all day (except for me of course because I’m awesome!).

  3. Also thanks for the bird ID! He sounds like a comic book character.
