Let’s Talk About What’s Going On In This Mural

This is a mural from the P87 school on the Upper West Side. There’s a lot going on in this mural (see bigger shots on Flickr). A lot. One particular head scratcher is why a goblin is bursting forth from a horse. Do the students of P87 have night terrors over this? Seriously, what’s going on in this mural?

Cats protecting cemeteries with giant sundaes in them? Huh? Wha?

  1. Maybe unicorns are secretly evil, and the feline time guardian is exorcising the evil unicorn goblin from this otherwise ordinary horse. I think it makes sense, because then the horse gets a sundae afterwards, because being exorcised is like getting your tonsils out. Everybody knows that.

  2. The Great Gazoo’s evil cousin, the Not So Great Horseshoo.

  3. When I first opened this page, I thought that was a New Yorker cover.

  4. The real question is why Dave is spending so much time hanging out at public schools.

  5. I can’t afford to hang out at private schools.

  6. My theory is that the genie was added after the fact, to obscure the horse’s genitals.

  7. I don’t know - something in that knowing smirk says “female” to me.
