It’s day two of Tara’s west coast trip and today was as exciting and action packed as yesterday.
- Spent a bit of the morning working a small secret project no one but me knows about. Not even you Tara! I have secrets! Seeeeeeeecrets.
- Fixed some layout and tech issues with the new blog theme here on Glark.org. I am just loving this theme.
- Ventured out to get my daily chai but today I had a fully stamped loyalty card so it was free! Oh it is an exciting time to be alive, no?
- Dived into the 10 lbs. of property sale documents to try to figure out by what mechanism the fair city of New York is getting their property taxes automatically because the site says we’re all paid up but we haven’t written cheque one to them. Turns out it’s all rolled up in our mortgage payment widthdrawls. In Toronto we actually get a bill each quarter in the mail so this all seems too causal and backalley to me. I’m on to you New York City (points knowingly!).
- Hung up deer head on wall behind my desk. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with myself that I managed to do this. I usually can’t put a nail in a wall without bending it or removing a giant chunk of plaster. I drilled a hole in the wall with my new cordless power drill then hammered in one of those plastic thingees that keeps the screw tight. Then, after figuring out the screwdriver part of the power drill needs to use a little extended bit, I managed to drill the screw in and hang “Albert” up. Today I am a man!
- Actually opened the Valu-Pak that was in the mail and went through the coupons. Turns out our dry cleaner had a coupon in there! Score!

NO WAY! Dry cleaner coupon? This is a marvelous day indeed.
Actually, blame your mortgage company for the tax prepayments. They want to make sure they have the taxes paid up because a tax lien would have priority over their mortgage. (Of course, this does not stop them from paying the taxes late - yes, I’m looking at YOU, Wells Fargo.) City of New York is just along for the ride.
Ah, interesting and good to know, thanks.
For the record I wasn’t blaming anyone — in fact I’m a fan of automatic things — I just wanted to know how it was happening.
Are you in a co-op or a condo? ‘Cause if it’s a co-op, you don’t technically own the apartment, but you do pay a share of the building’s property taxes via your maintenance fee.
We’re in a condo — in fact we had to limit our search to condos when we moved because of our work visa status. Not that you can’t own a co-op on a work visa but it’s a very tough sell to a co-op board because you can’t guarantee you are going to be a long-term owner.
