There was a time not to long ago I was looking into building a custom PC to create a multi-tuner DVR system using the open source Myth software and a crapload of tuners. I needed to record everything on the major channels every night and be able to rip a buncha stuff off it. The more I looked into it the more complications bubbled to the surface. Linux headaches, videocard issues, and lack of emergency support.
Today I crossed paths with what would have been a great solution, the SnapStream Television Search Appliance.
Look at that mother! Record 10 channels at once on 1.5 terabytes of storage for 2,300 hours of recording time. It also lets you search the closed captions for keywords or you can set it to automatically flag content based on keywords. It records everything in the MPEG-2 format which means you can easily toss your clips (which you can define within the appliance’s interface) on to a DVD or download on the network. Sweet!
Oh, it’s also $15,000.
If that’s out of your league you could get some BaconSalt (via Omar). The only meaty smell that still gets to this vegetarian is bacon. Sweet sweet bacon. I’m intrigued but the closest retailer is in Brooklyn which is where all the CHUDs are. Has anyone used this stuff? Does it actually taste bacon-y or is it just powderized bacon bits?

So like, there’s God, and then there’s BACON SALT… JUST SAYIN’!
Strega told me over IM that Bacon Salt indeed tastes like bacon and is good on popcorn. I just need to find some now.
To be fair, I wasn’t the one who came up with Bacon Salt (or the quest therefrom.) My friend Doris Truong posted about it on Facebook.
Glark might have seen it himself if he hadn’t BAILED ON FACEBOOK!
At least the blog is still alive.
If there’d been a place for Glark to write, “I realized I hate Facebook” before he left, he probably would have.
I’m fickle.
